The 2011 J.B. and Maurice C. Shapiro Environmental Law Conference will be held on March 23-24 2011 at George Washington University's Jacob Burns Moot Court Room. The subject of the conference, "Environmental Governance at the Leading Edge of Technology", will

explore the need for the possible structure of anticipatory governance systems that are capable of protecting the environment and public health in the context of emerging technologies such as geo-engineering to address climate change, hydro-fracturing  and deep water drilling to recover energy resources, synthetic biology to produce new fuels and other innovative materials, and expanding use of nanotechnologies.

Among the panelists is Porter Wright's own John Monica, sitting as part of the Day one panel titled "The Strengths and Limitations of Existing Goverance Structure".

Today's Federal Register carries a notice of a public meeting on Tuesday March 30th and Wednesday March 31st 2010 to be held at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn-Key Bridge in Arlington Virginia .

The meeting will be a workshop designed "to provide an open forum to discuss the state-of-the-art of the science related to environmental, health, and safety aspects of nanomaterials
in two areas: Risk Management Methods and Ethical, Legal, and Societal
Implications (ELSI) of Nanotechnology."

Registration is required to attend the workshop and information on how to register is available in the notice. Anyone wishing to present 3-5 minutes of public comments also needs to register. Written or electronic comments must be submitted via e-mail at capstone@nnco.nano.gov until April 30, 2010. Written comments can also be mailed to Capstone Workshop, c/o NNCO,
4201 Wilson Blvd., Stafford II, Suite 405, Arlington, VA 22230.

John Monica, a partner in the DC office of Porter Wright   and frequent contibutor to this blog,  was announced as a new Contibuting Editor for Environmental, Health and Safety and Regulation for InterNano, a project of the National Nanomanufacturing Network.

As Contibuting Editor, John will be tasked with informing InterNano readers about the latest in EHS and regulatory developments, an area which will be of concern for nanomanufacturers and others in the nanotechnology field.
